Sand sculpture - turtleSince the late 1980s the independent Helford Marine Conservation Group has been running public events every year. These highlight aspects of particular interest on the River and its sensitive marine wildlife.

This programme of events has been produced to help people to learn, understand and enjoy this very special place.

Cornish Dolphins – an update

Dolphin sightings always arouse interest and pleasure. Dr Nick Tregenza will tell us about the current state of research and issues involving dolphins, porpoises and whales in Cornish waters.

The National Lobster Hatchery - the future

The National Lobster Hatchery represents a local pioneering programme to enhance shellfish stocks through the release of juvenile lobsters. Dominic Boothroyd will place its work in a global and local context, discussing some of the issues facing fisheries today and some possible solutions.

Message in the Waves and AGM

The intensely moving documentary ‘Message in the Waves’ triggered the plastic bag- free movement in the UK. Although it focuses on the effects of marine pollution on the people and wildlife of Hawaii, it is a global film, and Jolyon Sharpe, Senior Beach Ranger, will give the local perspective on Cornwall's marine litter and how we can all help.

Seashore Safari

Join Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s Marine Conservation Officer Ruth Williams in a sea search at the edge of the Helford river as the tide falls and find crabs, sea-anemones, seaquirts and other mysterious creatures. Wear non-slip rock-scrambling shoes that you are prepared to get wet! Bring small nets and plastic buckets if you wish.

A guided wild food walk with expert Caroline Davey to identify edible Spring plants found in the hedgerows and woodland around Treath and Bosahan on the south shore of the Helford. Farming through the Ages

Gear Farm on the southern side of the Helford has been a focus of human activity since farming began in Britain. BBC’s Time Team excavated part of the site a few years’ ago. Hear James Gossip, Cornwall Council archaeologist, and Mary Combe from the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group describe how the land has been used through time. Booking required. Max.40.

This offers huge protection but also many challenges to ensure businesses and livelihoods can continue.
